Glimmers: Art Therapy for Kids

GLIMMERS

Glimmers are small moments that spark joy or peace. They can help cue our nervous system to feel safe or calm. While triggers are cues around us that signal a potential threat, their opposite—glimmers—are cues that signal safety.*

Glimmers is a series of art therapy workshops held at Cozy meant for beautiful tiny souls aged 6 to 16. There is only one main goal: keeping the magic alive! The end result is just a part of the process and the process itself is a metaphor for life! With the materials available, our own hands, and our endless wells of imagination, let’s make the impossible possible. We can build treehouses for elves with hidden passageways. We can paint a fairy mushroom kingdom. We can make a book nook that looks like a scene from your favorite fantasy movie. We can create all kinds of iridescent chaos and more. Children are so used to being told what to do, but that’s not how creativity works, now is it? In these workshops, the expression of their individuality and personality will be my absolute priority and we will learn from each other along the way. They decide what to do and I help them achieve it. They also get to decide the timeframe in which it is done, they can take one session or more to complete their ideas! If (and only if) they don’t know what to do, I’ll have some tricks up my sleeve ready to be shared with them!

These workshops can be held in English and Portuguese simultaneously! Come join us for a cozy and wholesome afternoon where magic will be our reality! I am beyond excited to have you with us. Also, a bird told me Cozy’s cookie jar is always full!

I hope to see you soon!

About Rita: Hello lovelies! I’m Rita and I’m a practicing fine artist and an art therapy student trained in all kinds of media from drawing to painting, sculpture, illustration, analog and digital photography, editing, printmaking, mosaic, a bit of ceramics and many more may come because learning is a never-ending passion of mine. I studied Fine Arts - Painting at the Faculty of Fine Arts - University of Porto and I have a Postgrad in Art Therapy and Community Art from Metàfora Barcelona. I am going into my Master’s in Art Therapy at the same institution.

I have been an artsy babysitter, a resident artist at a children’s library, a museum educator, an atelierista, an art educator, an art teacher, you name it! And all of these quests have come down to this: what I am at heart is an art therapist for children and youngsters and I am finally putting my soul mission into practice. I believe in the magic of making children feel seen and I am passionate about building the safe spaces needed in order for that to happen.

*The concept of glimmers was first introduced in 1995 by neuroscientist Stephen Porges - within polyvagal theory - and later on, Deb Dana, a clinician, author, and speaker, developed and established the concept of triggers versus glimmers.
