Emotional Awareness: Perception, Breath, and Movement with Josefina

The contemporary world has taught us to leave our emotions out of the workplace and important life decisions. Emotions have historically had a negative connotation from the Western perspective and were segregated in the field of science because it is an aspect that in popular consciousness, occurs only in the subjectivity of human beings. However, only in recent decades emotions have been studied in greater detail, through the critical eye of renowned psychologists and neuroscientists such as Paul Eckman, Susan Bloch and more recently the Portuguese António Damasio. The latter made us aware that emotions also occur at a biological and physical level, and that their recognition, as well as their subsequent management, can be a powerful tool for human development, both in work and therapeutic terms.

In two blocks of physical practice and a third block of theoretical conversation, this workshop seeks for participants to develop their body awareness and be able to recognize the multiple elements of our body that influence the experience and expression of an emotion. Each participant's attention will be exercised through sequences of bodily dissociation as well as through dialogue dynamics with the space and other participants. Finally we will learn postural, breathing and facial patterns from Susan Bloch's Alba Emoting method.

About Josefina

Josefina, a Chilean artist, dedicated herself to theater, staging, and theatrical pedagogy during the early years of her career at the University of Chile. She focused her studies on the poetics of Antonin Artaud on the one hand and on the study of emotions through Susana Bloch's Alba Emoting method on the other. In 2016 she traveled to Vietnam where she studied traditional Vietnamese theater, “Cai Luong” which combines dance, theater, and singing, for two years. In the last year of her studies, she founded and ran Bookurshows, a live music company for another four years in Ho Chi Minh City. In this way and working with big brands as Hyatt, Sheraton, Ritzz, among others, she opens up space in her career for the professional field of music, experimenting with rhythms from different cultures but without leaving the territory of staging. In 2020, she traveled to Portugal to do a master's degree in contemporary artistic creation, which allows her to put the different disciplines she learned into dialogue, as well as her experiences throughout a journey that has not yet ended.
